WSU undergraduates land 44 awards at SURCA 2018 on April 2

Of the 256 Washington State University students accepted to present 213 posters at the seventh annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) event April 2, 54 took home 44 awards for their top presentations across eight categories.

At this WSU-wide venue for students from all majors, there were 20 winners of 17 $300 crimson awards, the highest possible; 27 winners of 20 $200 gray awards, the second-highest; 6 winners of 6 $100 novice awards, for students with up to two semesters of research work and who show exceptional promise; and, 1 recipient of 1 $100 early career award, given to freshmen and sophomores only. » More …

SURCA 2018 set for April 2 features 250 undergraduate researchers; SURCA, Emeritus Society awards bound for top presenters

More than 250 Washington State University students will participate in the seventh annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) on April 2 in the CUB M.G. Carey Senior Ballroom, announced Shelley Pressley, director of the WSU Office of Undergraduate Research.

“SURCA 2018 will be packed with amazing presentations on research, scholarship, and creative activities that students have conducted with mentors from fields all across WSU,” said Pressley. “Around 250 faculty members and postdocs, as well as experts from outside the university, are needed to judge the presentations using a rubric. And, thanks to generous donors, prizes will be awarded once again to the best presenters from eight categories of entries.

“Most judging will be complete when the doors open to the public at 3:30 p.m. that Monday. We welcome everyone at WSU and from the community to come to talk to the student researchers and learn about the important contributions they are making to research at WSU and in their disciplines.”

PULLMAN, Wash.—Of Washington State University’s 225 students presenting 205 posters at the sixth annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) on March 27, 61 received a total of 54 awards for their exceptional presentations.

Carey Senior Ballroom. Awards will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the CUB Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

SURCA is the unique opportunity for students from all majors, grades, and campuses to present their mentored research, scholarship, and creative activities on posters, and win awards in eight categories that same day. It’s presented by the Office of Undergraduate Research, part of WSU Undergraduate Education. This year, SURCA is the first event of the WSU Showcase Week.

Portrait photo of Kevin SchillingPULLMAN, Wash.—The Associated Students of Washington State University passed R46-14 on Feb. 1, a resolution supporting both undergraduate research and the Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (SURCA), an annual spring poster event for freshmen through seniors college-wide.

The measure was introduced by Sen. Kevin Schilling, himself an undergraduate researcher who competed in SURCA 2016. He is one of four senators representing the College of Arts and Sciences on ASWSU.

PULLMAN, Wash. — The 2015 Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) at Washington State University broke many records on March 30, in terms of participation, number of awards, number of winners, sponsoring donors, and attendance.

With topics ranging from ocelot latrines to the role of vitamin A in spermatogonia, and from apparel websites to commuting rural nurses, 189 students from four campuses plus WSU Extension registered to display posters in eight categories on their research, scholarship, and creative activities at the fourth annual event.

WSU undergraduate research showcase March 30 sets new participation record

PULLMAN, Wash. — Presenting 167 posters at the 2015 Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) Monday, March 30, will be 186 freshmen through seniors from every campus of Washington State University. The public is invited to visit students at their posters starting at 3:30 in the CUB M.G. Carey Senior Ballroom, and to the awards ceremony at 4:45 p.m. in the CUB Junior Ballroom.

“This is the largest number of participants in SURCA’s four-year history,” said Shelley Pressley, director of the hosting Office of Undergraduate Research, part of the WSU Office of Undergraduate Education. “This tells us that SURCA is gaining recognition as a quality event. It may also speak to the fact that WSU is engaging more students across all disciplines in the high-impact experience of mentored research, scholarship, and creative activity that we term ‘research.’”
