Forty-six WSU Undergraduates Land 37 Research Awards at the SURCA 2019 Poster Event March 25

Group photo of SURCA 2019 award winners posing on stage in the CUB auditorium.PULLMAN, Wash.—Nearly a quarter of Washington State University students who delivered poster presentations won monetary awards at the eighth annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) on March 25 in Pullman.

SURCA is the unique WSU-wide venue for students from all majors, years in college, and from all WSU campuses.

Heading into the afternoon event, 206 students from five campuses had been accepted to present 167 posters detailing their research, scholarship, and creative activity conducted with a mentor. Faculty, postdoctoral students, and community experts used a common rubric to judge and score all presentations in eight SURCA categories that cover all disciplines at the college.

At the concluding awards ceremony, 46 students were announced as the recipients of a total of 37 awards; one student received two awards. Awardees are from Pullman, the Global Campus, and campuses in Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver. » More …

PULLMAN, Wash.—Of Washington State University’s 225 students presenting 205 posters at the sixth annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) on March 27, 61 received a total of 54 awards for their exceptional presentations.

Group photo of SURCA 2017 award winnersThere were 21 winners of 20 crimson awards, the highest; 23 winners of 19 gray awards, the second-highest; 12 recipients of 10 novice awards, for students who worked up to two semesters on their research and who show exceptional promise; and, 5 recipients of 5 early career awards, given to freshmen and sophomores only. One student won two awards.

Carey Senior Ballroom. Awards will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the CUB Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

SURCA is the unique opportunity for students from all majors, grades, and campuses to present their mentored research, scholarship, and creative activities on posters, and win awards in eight categories that same day. It’s presented by the Office of Undergraduate Research, part of WSU Undergraduate Education. This year, SURCA is the first event of the WSU Showcase Week.

Portrait photo of Kevin SchillingPULLMAN, Wash.—The Associated Students of Washington State University passed R46-14 on Feb. 1, a resolution supporting both undergraduate research and the Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (SURCA), an annual spring poster event for freshmen through seniors college-wide.

The measure was introduced by Sen. Kevin Schilling, himself an undergraduate researcher who competed in SURCA 2016. He is one of four senators representing the College of Arts and Sciences on ASWSU.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Presenting 167 posters at the 2015 Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) Monday, March 30, will be 186 freshmen through seniors from every campus of Washington State University. The public is invited to visit students at their posters starting at 3:30 in the CUB M.G. Carey Senior Ballroom, and to the awards ceremony at 4:45 p.m. in the CUB Junior Ballroom.

“This is the largest number of participants in SURCA’s four-year history,” said Shelley Pressley, director of the hosting Office of Undergraduate Research, part of the WSU Office of Undergraduate Education. “This tells us that SURCA is gaining recognition as a quality event. It may also speak to the fact that WSU is engaging more students across all disciplines in the high-impact experience of mentored research, scholarship, and creative activity that we term ‘research.’”
